Rounding Decimals gives a simpler number that is close to the original, an everyday skill in NSW Year 7 maths (NESA outcome MA4‑FRC‑C‑01). Keep the decimal places you need and let the next digit decide: 5 or more rounds up, anything less leaves the kept digit alone, so \(28.479 \approx 28.48\).
You will round to one, two or three decimal places and to the nearest whole number, use the approximately equal sign, handle a 9 that rounds up, avoid double rounding, and decide when an exact answer is better. Splitting a bill to the nearest cent is a familiar use. It is part of Year 7 Decimals.
