Mean and Mode

The mean adds all the values and divides by how many there are; the mode is the value that appears most often. In NSW Year 8 maths (NESA outcome MA4‑DAT‑C‑02) both are found from lists, frequency tables and dot plots.

You will use negative and decimal values, describe a set as uniform, unimodal, bimodal or multimodal, and use total \(=\) mean \(\times\) number of values to find a missing value, the mark needed to reach a target mean or the correct mean after a data entry error. You will also combine two classes’ means and see how one outlier pulls the mean. Winter mornings at Charlotte Pass and test marks are typical data. It is part of Year 8 Investigating Data.
