Median and Range

The median is the middle value of an ordered set and the range is the highest value minus the lowest. In NSW Year 8 maths (NESA outcome MA4‑DAT‑C‑02) the median describes the centre of the data and the range describes its spread.

You will find the median of odd and even sets, read it from a frequency table, dot plot or stem-and-leaf plot with a running count, and find ranges that include negative values, such as golf scores against par. You will also see how removing an outlier changes the range far more than the median, compare two food trucks’ waiting times and work backwards to a missing value. It is part of Year 8 Investigating Data.
