Adding and Subtracting Terms Theory

When adding or subtracting terms only `like' terms can be added or subtracted.\\ For example \(3 x\) and \(2 x, 4 y^2\) and \(y^2\), \(2 x y\) and \(4 y x\) are like terms.\\ However \(2 x\) and \(3 y, 2 x y^2\) and \(x^2 y\) are not like terms. \begin{multicols}{2} \textbf{Example 1}\\ Simplify \(2 x^2+3 x+x^2+4 x\)\\ \textbf{Example 1 solution}\\ \(\begin{aligned} 2 x^2+3 x+x^2+4 x & =2 x^2+x^2+3 x+4 x \\ & =3 x^2+7 x \end{aligned}\) \columnbreak \textbf{Example 2}\\ Simplify \(2 x y+4 y x+x+y\)\\ \textbf{Example 2 solution}\\ \(\begin{aligned} 2 x y+4 y x+x+y & =2 x y+4 x y+x+y \\ & =6 x y+x+y \end{aligned}\) \end{multicols}
