Multiplying Terms

To multiply algebraic terms in NSW Year 8 maths, multiply the coefficients and then the pronumerals (NESA outcome MA4‑ALG‑C‑01). A pronumeral multiplied by itself is written as a power, so \(3y \times 6y = 18y^2\), and the sign comes from counting the negative factors.

You will multiply two or three terms with negative coefficients and write the pronumerals in alphabetical order, as in \(2x^2 \times (-y) \times 4y = -8x^2y^2\). You will also simplify a product and then collect it with a like term. The area of a rectangular garden bed and the volume of a storage box shaped like a rectangular prism are both products of terms. It is part of Year 8 Algebra.
