A rectangular prism is a box shape, and its volume is the number of unit cubes that fill it. In NSW Year 7 maths (NESA outcome MA4‑VOL‑C‑01) you move from counting cubes layer by layer to the formula \(V = l \times w \times h\).
You will also use \(V = \text{base area} \times \text{height}\), change every edge to the same unit before multiplying, find a missing edge from the volume, find the edge of a cube from its volume, count how many small cubes fit inside a box, and see what happens when every edge is doubled. Storage boxes, concrete slabs and sandpits are everyday examples. It is part of Year 7 Area and Volume.
