Here the pronumeral has been multiplied or divided by a number, as in \(3x = 24\) or \(m \div 3 = -6\). In NSW Year 7 maths (NESA outcome MA4‑EQU‑C‑01) you undo this with the inverse operation, applied to both sides.
You will divide both sides to undo a multiplication and multiply both sides to undo a division, keep track of negative numbers, and accept answers that are decimals. You will meet a first two-part case such as \(2x \div 3 = 8\) and check by substitution. A submarine diving at a steady rate is one real setting. This subtopic is part of Year 7 Algebra and Equations.
