A square root undoes squaring and a cube root undoes cubing, so \(\sqrt{49} = 7\) because \(7^2 = 49\). This NSW Year 7 maths subtopic (NESA outcome MA4‑IND‑C‑01) builds fluency with square and cube numbers.
You will evaluate roots of perfect squares and cubes, estimate a root by finding the two whole numbers it lies between, explain why a square root is not half the number, check that \(\sqrt{4 \times 25} = \sqrt{4} \times \sqrt{25}\), use roots in the order of operations, and find how much fencing a square vegetable patch needs from its area, and the edge of a cube-shaped box from its volume. It is part of Year 7 Whole Numbers.
