Rounding swaps a number for a simpler one close to it, and an estimate uses rounded numbers to give a quick answer. This NSW Year 7 maths subtopic consolidates primary-school skills with whole numbers, so it has no Stage 4 outcome of its own, and it prepares you to check every calculation you do later.
You will name place values, round to the nearest ten, hundred or thousand using the deciding digit, round to the first digit for quick estimates, use the \(\approx\) sign, and judge whether a calculator answer is reasonable. Estimating crowd sizes or the cost of a team's footballs are typical uses. It is part of Year 7 Whole Numbers.
