Lowest Common Multiple

20 practice questions 2 video lessons Theory + worked examples

The lowest common multiple (LCM) of two numbers is the smallest number that both divide into exactly. In NSW Year 7 maths it is the tool behind finding a common denominator when comparing, adding or subtracting fractions (NESA outcome MA4‑FRC‑C‑01).

You will find the LCM by listing multiples, by going up the multiples of the larger number and with prime factors, find the lowest common denominator of two fractions, solve "meeting again" problems such as buses leaving together or lights flashing in step, and test the link between the HCF and the LCM. It is part of Year 7 Whole Numbers.
