Adding Mixed Numerals extends fraction addition to numbers like \(2\frac{1}{2}\) in NSW Year 7 maths (NESA outcome MA4‑FRC‑C‑01). Add the whole numbers, add the fractions using a common denominator, then put the two parts together, so \(2\frac{1}{2} + 4\frac{1}{3} = 6\frac{5}{6}\).
You will use the lowest common denominator, carry a whole across when the fractions add to more than 1, add three mixed numerals, find a missing number, and check with an estimate. Recipes, walking distances, time spent at the beach and the perimeter of a garden bed are typical problems. It is part of Year 7 Fractions.
