Adding and Subtracting Fractions covers combining and comparing parts of a whole in NSW Year 7 maths (NESA outcome MA4‑FRC‑C‑01). Fractions can only be added or subtracted when they share a denominator, so first rename them using the lowest common denominator (LCD), then add or subtract the numerators.
You will work with related and unrelated denominators, simplify answers, write improper results as mixed numerals, subtract a fraction from a whole number and find missing numerators. You will also see why \(\frac{2}{3} + \frac{1}{4}\) is not \(\frac{3}{7}\). Spending pocket money and planning a garden are everyday examples. It is part of Year 7 Fractions.
