To estimate, round each number to a nearby friendly number, then calculate — the answer is close but much quicker. Estimates are used to check whether an exact answer is reasonable.

To estimate, round each number to a nearby friendly number — the nearest ten, hundred or thousand — then add or subtract.

A digit of \(5\) or more rounds up; less than \(5\) rounds down.

An estimate is used to check an answer. If the exact answer is nowhere near the estimate, something has gone wrong.

How to estimate a calculation

Estimate \(1438 + 129\) to the nearest ten.

Example 2 — Nearest hundred
Estimate \(487 + 312\) to the nearest hundred.
Solution
\(487 + 312\)\(\approx\)\(500 + 300\)
\(=\)\(800\)
Example 3 — Reasonable?
A student says \(487 + 312 = 7990\). Is that reasonable?
Solution

The estimate is about \(800\).

\(7990\) is far too big, so the answer is not reasonable.

Example 4 — Subtraction
Estimate \(612 - 288\) to the nearest hundred.
Solution
\(612 - 288\)\(\approx\)\(600 - 300\)
\(=\)\(300\)

Common pitfalls

Treating the estimate as the answer. An estimate is close, but its job is to check — not to replace the exact calculation.
Rounding to an unhelpful place. Nearest hundred is quick; nearest ten is more accurate. Choose what suits the numbers.
Ignoring a warning. If the exact answer is far from the estimate, go back and check the working.
