Theory

To solve a word problem, decide whether to add or subtract, set out the calculation, and answer the question asked. A bar model of two parts and a whole shows which operation to use.

A word problem describes a situation in words; your job is to turn it into a calculation.

Add to put amounts together (altogether, total, combined). Subtract to take away or compare (left, how many more, difference).

How to solve a word problem

  1. Read the whole problem and picture it as parts and a whole.
  2. Decide: whole missing means add; a part missing means subtract.
  3. Calculate, then answer in words with the amount and what it counts.
Example 1 — Altogether
A school has \(348\) junior and \(276\) senior students. How many altogether?
Solution

The whole is missing, so add.

Example 2 — How much left
A tank held \(1250\) L. \(875\) L was used. How much is left?
Solution

A part is missing, so subtract.

\(1250 - 875\)\(=\)\(375\)

Example 3 — How many more
Team A scored \(615\) and Team B scored \(480\). How many more did Team A score?
Solution

“How many more” compares, so subtract.

Example 4 — Money total
A club raised $4500 at one event and $2750 at another. How much altogether?
Solution
\(4500 + 2750\)\(=\)\(7250\)

The club raised $7250.

Common pitfalls

Choosing an operation too early. Read to the end and decide what the question actually asks before you calculate.
Trusting a key word blindly. “How many more” sounds like adding but means compare, which is subtraction.
Leaving the answer as a bare number. Finish with the amount and what it counts, such as “624 students”.
