Year 8 Maths, mapped to the NSW syllabus.
The complete NSW Year 8 Mathematics course — every topic, every subtopic, every question with a fully worked solution. Authored by an experienced Australian maths teacher and aligned to the NESA Mathematics K–10 Syllabus (2022) at Stage 4.
What Year 8 students learn in NSW
Year 8 is the second year of Stage 4 under the NSW Mathematics K–10 Syllabus (2022), published by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). It builds directly on Year 7: integers, decimals, fractions, algebra and equations are all taken further, and students meet new ideas such as Pythagoras' theorem, the index laws, irrational numbers and graphing straight lines on the number plane.
The 14 topics below cover the three NESA strands — Number and Algebra, Measurement and Space, and Statistics and Probability — with the Working Mathematically outcome (MAO‑WM‑01) running through all of them. Each Stage 4 topic shows its NESA outcome codes, and every one of the 2,280+ questions has a fully worked solution.

About Stage 4
Stage 4 spans Years 7 and 8. NESA does not set which topics belong to each year — schools decide how to split the content. The 14 topics above are the Stage 4 content most NSW schools cover in Year 8. They take Year 7 work further — negative decimals, recurring decimals, expanding and factorising, and two-step equations (MA4‑EQU‑C‑01) — and add new content: Pythagoras' theorem (MA4‑PYT‑C‑01), the index laws (MA4‑IND‑C‑01) and linear relationships on the number plane (MA4‑LIN‑C‑01). The course also includes some extension work that looks ahead to Stage 5: congruent figures, Venn diagrams and two-way tables, and the angle sum of any polygon.

Frequently asked questions
Does Class Mathematics follow the 2022 NSW syllabus?
Yes. Class Mathematics is aligned to the NSW Mathematics K–10 Syllabus (2022), the current syllabus published by NESA. The Year 8 topics map to Stage 4 outcome codes, apart from the Stage 5 extension topic Congruent Figures — for example, Pythagoras maps to MA4‑PYT‑C‑01, and Algebra covers MA4‑ALG‑C‑01 and MA4‑IND‑C‑01.
What is the Working Mathematically outcome (MAO-WM-01)?
Working Mathematically (MAO‑WM‑01) is the outcome that runs through every topic in the NSW Mathematics K–10 Syllabus. It is about communicating reasoning, building fluency and understanding, and solving problems. Rather than being a separate topic, it is built into all of them, and every worked solution on Class Mathematics shows these steps.
What topics are covered in NSW Year 8 Maths?
NSW Year 8 Maths covers 14 topics across three NESA strands: Number and Algebra (working with numbers, algebra, equations, fractions and percentages, rates and ratios, graphing linear equations, time and travel), Measurement and Space (Pythagoras, geometry, area and perimeter, volume, congruent figures), and Statistics and Probability (investigating data, probability).
Is Year 8 Maths the same as Stage 4?
Year 8 is the second year of Stage 4, which spans Years 7 and 8. It extends the ideas introduced in Year 7 and adds new ones, such as Pythagoras' theorem and the index laws. NESA does not set which topics belong to each year — schools decide how to split the content.
How many topics and questions are in the Year 8 course?
There are 14 topics in NSW Year 8 Maths, divided into 114 subtopics with 2,280+ practice questions. Every question includes a fully worked solution to support independent learning.
What is the hardest topic in Year 8 Maths?
Many Year 8 students find Algebra and Equations the most challenging, because the index laws, expanding, factorising and solving equations all build on one another. Pythagoras' theorem is also new and needs careful setting out. Regular practice with worked solutions builds confidence in all of these.
How can parents help their Year 8 child with maths?
The most effective help is regular, structured practice that follows the NSW syllabus. Parents don't need to teach the content themselves — the worked solutions guide students through each problem. Short sessions of 20–30 minutes several times a week work better than long, occasional ones.
