Theory

To find the perimeter of a composite figure, walk right around the outline and add every side. Find any unmarked side first — it equals the long base minus the other runs.

A composite figure, such as an L-shape, is made of rectangles and has more than four sides.

Every side must be counted once, so follow the outline right around and return to the start.

A missing side is found by subtraction: the shorter runs together equal the longer one opposite them.

How to find a composite perimeter

  1. Find any unmarked side by subtracting the shorter runs from the longer one.
  2. Add every side, going right around the outline.
  3. Check against the bounding rectangle if the shape is an L.
Example 1 — Add all six sides
An L-shape has sides \(8, 2, 5, 4, 3, 6\) cm. Find its perimeter.
Solution
\(P\)\(=\)\(8+2+5+4+3+6=28\)

The perimeter is \(28\) cm.

Example 2 — Missing side
The base is \(12\) cm and the top run is \(5\) cm. Find the unmarked horizontal side.

The unmarked side is \(7\) cm.

Example 3 — Same as the rectangle
An L-shape fits inside a \(15\) cm by \(9\) cm rectangle. Find its perimeter.
Solution
\(P\)\(=\)\(2\times(15+9)=48\)

The perimeter is \(48\) cm.

Example 4 — Find then add
A figure has base \(16\), top run \(7\), and sides \(4, 6, 10\) cm. Find its perimeter.
Solution
\(\text{side}=16-7=9\)\(\rightarrow\)\(P=16+4+9+6+7+10=52\)

The perimeter is \(52\) cm.

Common pitfalls

Counting four sides. An L-shape has six sides, not four; missing two is a common slip.
Skipping the unmarked side. Find the missing length by subtraction before adding, or the total will be short.
Not closing the loop. Follow the outline right around and finish where you began, so every side is added once.
