International Time Zones

Time zones are set against Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), so Sydney on standard time is UTC+10 and Perth is UTC+8. In NSW Year 8 maths, students find the time difference between two places by working with these offsets as integers on a number line (NESA outcome MA4‑INT‑C‑01).

You will decide whether a city is ahead of or behind UTC and by how much, find the difference between two offsets, including half-hour and three-quarter-hour zones, and convert a clock time from one place to another. You will allow for daylight saving, cross the International Date Line where the day changes, and work out when flights land or must leave in local time. Planning calls and trips overseas uses exactly these steps. It is part of Year 8 Time and Travel.
