Equations with Brackets

An equation with brackets, such as \(8(x - 3) = 24\), treats the bracket as one quantity. In NSW Year 8 maths (NESA outcome MA4‑EQU‑C‑01) it is solved in two steps, either by dividing both sides by the number in front first or by expanding the bracket first.

You will choose the quicker method, solve equations with negative, decimal or fraction answers, handle a bracket on the right-hand side such as \(18 = 6(y + 1)\), and expand when the pronumeral also appears on the other side, as in \(3(m + 2) = 4m\). You will also find the first mistake in someone's working, and write equations for a canteen lunch order and for two shapes with equal perimeters. It is part of Year 8 Equations.
