Theory

A net is a solid opened out flat, so every face is shown once, joined edge to edge. Counting the shapes in a net counts the faces: a rectangular prism has \(6\) rectangles, a square pyramid has \(1\) square and \(4\) triangles.

How to read a net

  1. Count the flat shapes; each one becomes a face.
  2. Sort them into rectangles, squares and triangles.
  3. Match the shapes to a solid: two matching ends means a prism; one base with triangles means a pyramid.
  4. Fold the net in your mind along the shared edges to check it closes with no gaps.

A net is made of six rectangles. How many faces does the folded solid have?

Common pitfalls

Missing a face. Each shape in the net is one face; a rectangular prism needs \(6\) rectangles, not \(5\).
Confusing a prism with a pyramid. Two triangles with three rectangles make a triangular prism; four triangles with one square make a square pyramid.
