Theory

A translation slides a shape, a reflection flips it over a mirror line, and a rotation turns it about a point. All three move the shape without changing its size, so the image is congruent to the original.

A transformation moves a shape to a new position. Three transformations keep the shape exactly the same size and shape.

A translation slides the shape: every point moves the same distance in the same direction.

A reflection flips the shape over a mirror line, so the image faces the opposite way.

A rotation turns the shape about a fixed point. After any of these moves the image is congruent to the original.

How to name a transformation

  1. Compare the way each shape faces. Same way up and same direction points to a slide.
  2. Check for a flip. If the image is a mirror image, it is a reflection.
  3. Check for a turn. If the image is turned about a point, it is a rotation.
Example 1 — Name the move
A shape slides \(5\) units right and \(2\) units down onto its image. Name the transformation.

Every point slides the same way, so it is a translation.

Example 2 — Flipped over
A shape faces left; its image faces right, the same distance from a line. Name the move.

The shape is flipped over the line, so it is a reflection.

Example 3 — The image
A triangle is rotated about a point. What is true of its image?
Solution

A rotation keeps size and shape, so the image is congruent to the triangle.

Example 4 — Track a vertex
A vertex at \((2,3)\) slides \(4\) right and \(1\) down. Where does it land?
Solution
\((2+4,\ 3-1)\)\(=\)\((6,2)\)

Common pitfalls

Thinking the size changes. These moves are not enlargements; the image stays the same size.
Mixing up a slide and a turn. A translation keeps the shape the same way up; a rotation turns it.
Forgetting a reflection flips. A mirror image faces the opposite way to the original.
