Forces and Newton’s laws is part of the Mechanics topic in NSW Year 12 Mathematics Extension 2 (NESA outcome ME2-12-05). This subtopic applies Newton’s three laws of motion, using \(F = m\ddot{x}\) to link the resultant force on a mass \(m\) to its acceleration.
Students and teachers will cover treating forces as vectors: adding them, splitting each into perpendicular components, finding the part of a force along a chosen direction with projections in 2D and 3D, and checking equilibrium, including on smooth slopes — linking vectors and mechanics in the HSC Extension 2 course.
