Adding and Subtracting Integers

Adding and Subtracting Integers revises and extends a Year 7 skill in NSW Year 8 maths (NESA outcome MA4‑INT‑C‑01). The key step is to rewrite double signs first: adding a negative is subtracting, and subtracting a negative is adding its opposite, so \(-9 - (-18) = 9\).

You will work through longer chains such as \(-15 - (-32) - 24 + 9\), group positives and negatives, find missing integers and complete a number pyramid. You will also tell a change from a difference, as in the temperature gap between Mawson station and Alice Springs. Bank balances, lift levels below ground, an underwater camera and time zones all use integers. It is part of Year 8 Working with Numbers.
