Fraction Problems

Fraction Problems in NSW Year 8 maths (NESA outcome MA4‑FRC‑C‑01) are worded questions with more than one step. The first job is always to name the whole: a fraction of what is left is a fraction of a fraction, and fractions of different wholes cannot be compared on their own.

You will find what remains after several parts are used, work backwards from a known part to the whole, count how many equal pieces fit and give the leftover in the right unit, and combine two rates, such as two taps filling a trough together. Contexts include savings, lengths of pipe and ribbon, a canteen’s bread supply and the basketball players in a school. It is part of Year 8 Fractions and Percentages.
