Adding and Subtracting Fractions

Adding and Subtracting Fractions revisits a Year 7 skill and takes it further in NSW Year 8 maths (NESA outcome MA4‑FRC‑C‑01). Fractions can only be combined once the parts are the same size, so each one is renamed over the lowest common denominator before the numerators are added or subtracted.

You will carry or borrow a whole with mixed numerals, subtract a mixed numeral from a whole number, and add and subtract negative fractions such as \(-\frac{3}{4} - \frac{5}{6}\). You will also get a first look at simplifying expressions like \(\frac{x}{3} + \frac{x}{4}\), a Stage 5 skill, and solve problems about a bushwalking track, a school camp water tank and a farm dam sitting below its full mark. It is part of Year 8 Fractions and Percentages.
